May at HYS...

Hello again Friends! We are so glad you’re here :)

We have lots to share this month - 2 Knit-a-long options, new yarn from a local dyer in shop, the West Michigan Yarn Quest, and a fun idea for our Sock of the Month! No time to waste… let’s get to it!

May KAL

With warmer weather tempting us outdoors for walks, gardening, and so much more, it’s a great time to whip up a new summer top. They knit up fast (no sleeves!) and make the perfect transitional layering piece for spring temps. Then later on, you can wear them on their own this summer. We have TWO favorites to share with you this month… The SABAI TOP and the VACATION VEST. (Click on the pattern name for a link to the Ravelry Page)

Scroll a little further to see the shop samples and our yarn choices! And don’t forget… you always save 15% on yarn for our monthly KAL projects. Come join the fun!

Henny chose Tillie, a beautiful summer blend for this Sabai Top. Tillie is a luxurious hand-dyed yarn made of pima cotton and cupro, a sustainable silk-like byproduct of cotton processing. Tillie’s chainette construction creates a lightweight yarn with generous yardage, along with amazing softness and structure. Made in Peru, this cotton blend has a gorgeous drape, smooth feel, and long-lasting durability. Plus it’s machine washable!

Our second KAL option is the Vacation Vest. Henny made this one with Coastline from Jody Long. Coastline is a luxurious cotton and linen blend spun in Italy. The distressed colors, a result of the ways the fibers take the dyes at different rates, add extra depth to the finished fabric. The marled effect evokes a sun dappled day at the beach!

Supernova Dyeworks in the shop!

Local Mid-Michigan Dyer, Danna Brunger joined us on Local Yarn Store Day and brought her colorful hand-dyed yarns for a very successful trunk show. We were quickly smitten and knew we had to carry some in the shop! We have a small selection left from the trunk show and will be ordering more soon!

West Michigan Yarn Quest 2025!

Yay!!! May is here and we are now only 10 days away from the start of one of the most exciting fiber events of the year in our area! Passport sales continue and are available at the shop. Grab some of your fiber besties and plan out your route. You won’t want to miss out on all the fun, free patterns, and prizes!

We have a fun pattern picked for this month…

The Weekend Shorty Socks!

The Weekend Shorty Socks are a fun, easy, JOYFUL knit that can be whipped up quickly! A great stash-buster, these socks are designed with color play in mind! The pattern includes detailed instructions for SIX sizes, from toddler to adult!

For all sizes, you will need less than 200 yards of the MC, which makes up the body of the sock. This one is knitter’s choice - it can be solid, speckled or variegated. You’ll also need about 10 yards each of your contrast colors. You’ll use 6 different contrast colors per sock. We recommend solids or tonals for these.

Don’t have that many colors of sock yarn sitting around in your stash? No worries! We are going to toss up a big bowl of sock scraps! Go dig through your sock yarn leftovers and wind up twelve 10 yd balls to toss in the mix. We are sticking to SOLIDS and TONALS only for our Sock Salad Bowl… please don’t bring speckles, stripes, or variegated yarns to share.

We are kicking this off the first week of May. It’s a FREE PATTERN, so come with your pattern printed, about 200 yds of your main yarn color, and 12 mini balls to add to the Sock Salad Bowl! You’ll be able to chose 12 different colors from the bowl to create your contrast colors.

That’s all for now! Can’t wait to see you at the shop :)

Warm and wooly regards from all your friends at Henny’s Yarn Shop!
